  1. TNF-α was analysed in plasma using an ELISA kit. The remaining cytokines were analysed by Western blot and the data are expressed as percentage of control rats. Values are the mean ± SEM of 7 rats per group. Values significantly different from control rats are indicated by asterisk (*p < 0.05, **p < 0.01) and from hyperammonemic rats by ‘a’ (a = p < 0.05, aa = p < 0.01, aaa = p < 0.001, aaaa = p < 0.0001)
