Hyperglycemic conditions induced by streptozotocin promote astrocyte proliferation and reprogram homeostatic astrocytes into inflammatory phenotype in brains. Upon peripheral inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), reactive astrocytes augment LPS-induced blood-brain barrier (BBB) damages and myeloid cell infiltration into brains, which lead to neuroinflammation and the subsequent cognitive dysfunction
